The high heel may have been invented by Leonardo DaVinci. The style made their first appearance around 1500, when the concept of a “heel” was introduced as a better way of keeping a rider’s foot in the stirrup. In 1660, Nicholas Lestage became shoemaker to Louis XIV; he was so clever that some accused him of sorcery. The high heeled shoes he designed for Louis were as tall as 5”, and some were decorated with miniature battle scenes!
