One of the most romantic of the Scottish symbols, the Luckenbooth gained popularity during the 16th century Reign of Mary, Queen of Scots, and gets its name from their sale at the Luckenbooth or “locking booths”, small shops on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh which could be securely locked at night. Our highly polished pendant features the “M” in the centre, a popular addition to the design since the 1850’s. A matching pendant is available. Luckenbooth Brooches were traditionally exchanged at the time of betrothal. Considered to be a lucky charm, the brooches were pinned to an infant’s blanket or shawl to guard the baby against evil spirits or the sithean (fairy spirits).
