  • Emperor Penguins spend their entire lives on the Antarctic ice and in its waters. The largest of the 18 penguin species, these flightless birds can dive over 900 feet (one was recorded at 1700 feet), hold their breath for about 22 minutes, and can swim about 15mph- almost as fast as a bottle dolphin! Although the Emperor Penguin is not endangered, 5 species are vulnerable and decreasing, 2 are near threatened, and 4 species are endangered.
