Bats emit pulses of very high frequency sound at a rate of 200 pulses per second. These pulses are completely inaudible to human ears. By listening to the echoes reflected back to them, bats can detect any object in their path. A bat’s ability to use this echolocation (sonar) is so accurate that it can avoid obstacles no wider than a piece of thread. In China, bats are a symbol of good luck and happiness. Over 37 species of bats are endangered, and at least 10 species are now extinct- gone forever.
