The degree of dexterity in an African elephant’s trunk is so acute that it can turn the pages of a book or pluck a single blade of grass. The largest animal that lives on land, elephants can weigh as much as a school bus- between 10,000 and 14,000 pounds. The decline and endangerment of elephant populations is due primarily to habitat loss and overexploitation by ivory poachers.
