Hands of Hope

Helping others one smile at a time.

About Hands of Hope

Our purpose is to give others hope in a non-judgmental way. We are committed to making positive changes in broken lives, materially and spiritually.

We are a group of caring people who provide working hands. We help provide for material needs in times of crisis, then minister to the spirit and empower individuals to achieve their goals.

Hands of Hope is a 501 C3 non-profit organization.

Our History

Hands of Hope began in 1999 with a yard sale bag of hand made dolls. Purchased by Jim and Tammy Palmer, the dolls became symbolic of the spirit of Christmas. Along with other toys, the dolls were given to needy area children. A Christmas ministry was born, and it has grown with each consecutive year, powered and nurtured by volunteers.

Tammy grew up in a single parent home and watched her mother struggle to provide for her family. Tammy had great compassion for the
depression and pain of disappointment that plagued her mother.

Jim comes from a large family. Even with two loving parents, the Palmers were no strangers to need. They received help at Christmas and
other times.

Through Tammy and Jim's compassion for families in need and their desire to give back, Hands of Hope was born.

Since 1999, approximately 4,000 children have been served. More than 16,000 toys, 110,000 stocking stuffers, a ton of books, puzzles, clothes, winter apparel, Bibles, and unconditional love have been given.

 How the Program Works

In 2005, Hands of Hope served more than 800 children – infants through 17 year-olds – providing toys, books and clothes to those less fortunate in the akron area community. Hundreds of volunteers come forward each year to help with all facets of the program.

It begins with an astonishing accumulation of toys, donated or purchased by volunteers with financial gifts from a wide array of sources, mostly individuals. The toys are warehoused as they come in, and five times a year are sorted and organized by age group by a team of volunteers. In November, more volunteers begin eligibility screening, and qualified parents are invited to shop at no cost on distribution day. During the first week of December, volunteers move the toys from the warehouse to their giveaway destination, then spend two full days setting up the rooms with toys and gifts. On the day of the giveaway, volunteers are in full swing from 6:00a.m. until after 1:00p.m. They greet the hundreds of parents, some of whom have come to take their place in line the night before.

The roll call of volunteers has grown each year, their desire to become involved both dedicated and passionate. Were it not for the spirit of volunteerism, Hands of Hope would not exist.
